Top tips for keeping your braces in the best possible condition

You’ve just had your braces fitted, and no doubt the main thing on your mind is the final date when treatment will be over and you can have the braces removed and say hello to your brand new sparkling smile…

However, before the treatment is over, there is some work for you to do to ensure the best possible outcome of your treatment!

  • Perfecting brushing and flossing

Just because you are an adult, doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from sprucing up your brushing technique!

When you have braces, you may be given elastic bands as a way to correct the bite of the teeth or align the teeth better. You should remember to remove these bands when you are brushing and replace them often.

The specificities of you clean your braces will be dependent on whether you have fixed braces like 6 Month Smiles, Invisalign or clear braces.

  • Mouthwash

Using a mouthwash with fluoride in it will help clean your braces as well as your teeth, and will give a more thorough clean to all the teeth – even the parts that you can’t reach with your toothbrush.

  • Be careful about what you are eating

Some foods can be harmful to your braces, if they are particularly sticky or hard they can end up damaging your braces. Where possible, avoid foods such as sticky chocolates or caramel, sweets, popcorn etc.

  • Get regular check-ups

Your orthodontist should incorporate regular check-ups into your treatment plan, whereby you can go over any issues such as lose or broken wires.

If you have regular check-ups then it means any issues will be detected before they become a severe problem.
