Now I’ve had braces, can I get my teeth whitened?

We treat many patients who are interested in post-braces teeth-whitening treatments.

If you’ve gone through the braces treatment process, you probably know the ecstatic feeling when you finally have your braces removed.

Usually patients are extremely excited for the ‘final reveal’ day, where they get to reap the benefits of the time they have put in wearing braces.

There are several teeth whitening options we offer here at The Perfect Smile, but first we will consider the best ways to keep your teeth white and healthy while wearing your braces.

Keeping teeth healthy when your braces are on

Dependent on the braces you have, the colour of your teeth could be impacted when you have them removed. For example, if you have fixed braces then you may notice small discoloured squares when the brackets are removed.

This is natural, as the teeth are protected by the bracket when you are wearing the braces, and does not mean any harm has been done to your teeth.

There are of course types of braces where this does not occur, for example if you have Invisalign or clear braces.

However, at The Perfect Smile it is our main goal to make sure you feel happy with the final outcome of your teeth post treatment. If you are not happy with the result of your final smile and whitening could help make you feel better, then there are a few options to consider.

Teeth whitening after braces

Our teeth whitening procedures are carried out by highly-qualified and experienced dentists, so you are in safe hands if you choose to have your whitening treatment at The Perfect Smile.

As a general rule it is safe to have your teeth whitened straight after your braces come off, and you can organise an appointment for the treatment when you are having your braces removed.

Teeth whitening is one of the quickest and most straightforward treatment we offer. Usually a dental hygienist will evaluate your teeth and apply the treatment.

The teeth whitening materials will be placed on your teeth and an ultraviolet will be used to set the gel.

It usually takes between 20-60 minutes for the desired shade of white to be reached – and you have the chance to let the dentist know if you want a subtle or bright smile!

Teeth whitening options

We offer a range of professional teeth whitening services at our dental practice which are suitable for treatment after you have your braces removed:

  • Laser teeth whitening: This is a fast and effective procedure. We use the Elexxion high-performance dental laser for laser bleaching. The laser accelerates the bleaching gel for maximum results in just one appointment.
  • Zoom teeth whitening: This treatment has been proven to lighten your teeth by up to 8 shades. Although this option is also available as a take home kit, we recommend the in practice option.
  • Enlighten evolution complete treatment system: This is a powerful option but does not cause increased sensitivity in the teeth like some treatments. Enlighten is the only whitening system in the world to guarantee the lightest possible results for every patient.

What about at home teeth whitening kits?

There are many ‘do-it-yourself’ teeth whitening kits you can buy for a decent price online. The danger with these kits is they are unregulated, so the chemicals used in the kits could be harmful for your teeth.

Additionally, there is no guarantee that they actually work, whereas if you have your teeth whitened at a dentist and don’t feel happy with the results, then you have the option to express your dissatisfaction with your dentist and hopefully offer an alternative solution.

However, we do provide at home kits that are a lot safer and more regulated than those you can buy over the counter or online! Contact us to arrange an appointment!
