Invisalign tips that will blow your mind

What No One Tells You About Invisalign

Considering Invisalign? Why shouldn’t you? It has the power to transform smiles in just a matter of months discreetly. It’s comfortable, it’s popular, it’s trusted by millions…

But what about its limitations? What are the top tips you need to know to ensure your Invisalign journey is a success? What’s the real review?

As orthodontists, we know everything there is to know about straightening smiles. We work with this system on a daily basis, see its results and hear our patient’s feedback. Here’s what you need to know…

1. Be careful, the aligners can stain!

One of Invisalign’s greatest advantages is that it is completely and easily removable. Not only can you take it out when you eat and drink, but you will also be required to in order to keep its clear, translucent appearance.

The smart plastic aligners are prone to staining, which means to keep them in perfect condition, you should brush your teeth after every meal as well as lightly cleaning your aligners to keep them fresh.

2. Make the switch before you go to sleep

Another one of Invisalign’s benefits is that it’s comfortable, but that does not mean that patients should not expect some slight discomfort when switching over to their new aligners.

Invisalign works to gradually shift your teeth into their ideal position and they do this with a series of custom aligners.

As the switchover period will require no interruption, it is advised to put a new set in before you go to bed. This will also mean you will get to sleep through any discomfort as you sleep.

3. 2 hours of non-wear time

You will have to wear your aligners for 22 hours per day to see successful results from your treatment.

It is even advisable to keep them in for longer than this and to wear them as much as possible.

However, Invisalign is designed to suit the lives of many on-the-go and busy individuals, which means they can be removed when playing a sport, playing musical instruments or even a quick kiss.

4. Water should be your first and only choice

One of the worst mistakes any Invisalign wearer can make is to drink anything other than water whilst wearing their Invisalign.

The sugary drinks have the ability to cause decay to your teeth during this treatment as well as possibly staining your aligners. Other drinks to avoid also include coffee, tea and other sodas.

5. Your oral hygiene will need to be a top priority

You need to treat Invisalign like another set of teeth, not only will your aligners need to be cleaned and taken care of, but adequately taking care of your teeth will be just as important.

That’s why embedding a good oral hygiene routine is one of the most important Invisalign tips. As orthodontists, we strongly suggest that you brush your teeth after every meal to eliminate any food particles that can cause decay or gum disease.

Brushing, rinsing and flossing will be essential.

6. Chewing gum is going to work in your favour

Invisalign wearers will know how helpful chewies can be, sugar-free chewing gum can be great at helping clean your teeth after a meal and can work great in helping your aligners secure.

7. Never throw away your old aligners

It’s human nature to lose things, so if you lose or break your new set of aligners, it is recommended to keep wearing your previous ones from the last stage to avoid retention.

This helps patients to avoid prolonged treatment times as it helps continue and maintain the treatment without interruption whilst you wait for your new set.

8. It’s not over until you finish wearing your Viveras

It might be tempting once you finish your Invisalign treatment to not wear your retainers or forget to put them on.

To complete the treatment correctly, you will be required to wear retainers when you sleep.

Depending on your case, you might be required to wear the retainers a full six months after treatment has ended. This is a nighttime only treatment.
