Worried About Thin and Receding Gums? Treatment, Non-surgery and Prevention

If your gums have receded or have just begun to recede, you will know how it can change the way you smile looks.

As your gums recede, they expose the root of your tooth, which can make teeth appear longer than they are.

For some of our patients, naturally thin gums is a reality or are often caused by over-brushing. Here’s how The Perfect Smile can help you.

Often once the gums have receded they cannot grow back

When the gum tissue separates from the tooth, it separates for life.

Not only can this knock your confidence, but most importantly, you lose essential protection for your tooth.

Although there are many effective treatments to reverse gum disease and make your mouth healthier the appearance of your smile may have been irreparably changed.

Healthy gums can look redder and can lose the white signs of periodontal disease but they will not physically grow up the tooth.

Veneers can help to improve this appearance

Whilst we may not be able to bring gums back to their former glory, we can conceal and overhaul their appearance with particular veneer treatments.

Porcelain veneers are known to improve the look of your teeth, and just in this way, gum veneers help reduce the appearance of receding gums.

  • Gingival veneers: Specially designed and custom-crafted veneers that make the teeth appear shorter to cover and conceal exposed tooth roots and receded gums.
  • Porcelain veneers: This type of veneer treatment can help correct gum recession issues, but they do not treat gum recession per se. They will minimise any discomfort caused by tooth sensitivity and can make teeth look shorter. Porcelain veneers have been known not to contribute to your gums receding or will cause gum recession of any kind. Everything you need to know.
  • Gum veneers: Specifically targeted for sufferers of gingival or periodontal disease, gum veneers cover unfortunate gaps between teeth.

Levels of gum recession

  1. Gums receding fast: If your gums have begun to recede all of a sudden, you could be suffering from a bacterial gum infection, which is beginning to destroy your gum tissue as well as the supporting bone underneath. Check with a dentist the stage of periodontal disease you may be experiencing for appropriate treatment solutions.
  2. Gums have receded: Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done for gums that have disappeared. Gums do not regenerate. Laser gum surgery, gum grafts or veneers might be the most appropriate solution.
  3. Gums begin to recede: It’s recommended to visit a dentist to determine the reason why your gums are beginning to pull away from teeth. Whilst gum disease is the main cause of the recession, other factors could include poor oral care, hormonal changes, smoking or bruxism.

Depending on which stage of gum recession you are experiencing, and other oral conditions present, you may be required to undergo precise procedures like gum grafts.

Gum grafting involves the rebuilding of the gum line, which will use an artificial gum tissue, or uses soft tissue grafts from other areas of the mouth.
