Three Dental Procedures That Help Overall Health

Preventative Dental Care Can Save Lives

Many people are anxious when they visit the dentist, but preventative care is essential not just for ensuring good oral health, but also for reducing the risk of developing more serious conditions such as cardiovascular disease, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, endocarditis and Alzheimer’s disease.

There are three essential dental procedures that can keep you healthy:

  1. X-rays –  have an X-ray image of your teeth taken; there are different types of X-ray images that can reveal a series of underlying health issues. These images can come in useful as they show a number of potential health risks, including cancerous tumours, infections, and large cavities. It is recommended you have your mouth X-rayed once a year.
  2. Fluoride Varnish – this is typically applied to young children as an early preventative measure. The process involves painting a varnish with a high fluoride concentration onto the surface of the teeth; this helps prevent tooth decay and is carried out twice a year. The official NHS website states that fluoride varnish can be used to prevent infections from untreated tooth decay that may result in life-threatening complications. You can also use fluoride toothpaste to help prevent decay.
  3. Pathological Examination – the final procedure that is recommended for ensuring good overall health is a pathological examination. This is similar to a routine examination that takes place at a dentist’s office, but it may involve more detailed check-up and could be followed by treatment if any problems are detected. It involves having gums and teeth examined for symptoms of various diseases.

DIGITAL RADIOGRAPHS (X-RAYS)

These are high definition instant radiographs (X-rays) of your teeth and jaws. This is something we have installed from the very beginning and most of our patients are already enjoying the advancement.

The main advantage of this type of X-rays is that the results are instant. This means that you do not have to wait for a length of time (or even another appointment) before a suitable diagnosis can be made.

COMBINING TEETH PROTECTION WITH ADVANCED DENTISTRY – IS THE FUTURE HERE?

Japanese scientists are paving the way for futuristic teeth that are free from decay. They have developed a microscopic coating for teeth that prevent dental decay from deteriorating teeth – it may also make these teeth appear whiter!

Professor Shigeki Hontsu at Kinki University in western Japan says, “This is the world’s first flexible apatite sheet” The microscopic coating is a film that covers the tooth. The film is made of a hardwearing and extremely flexible material called hydroxyapatite.
