Most Britons would like to see fluoride added to their drinking water, according to the results from a new survey carried out by the British Dental Health Foundation. Their view is supported by UK dentists and healthcare professionals who claim that water fluoridation would be very beneficial to the nation’s oral health.
The poll found that roughly four in five support water fluoridation as a means to improve dental health. Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, claimed that this could be the most important measure to be taken to improve oral health of the nation. Fluoridation is known to reduce the risk of developing tooth decay.
This statement is based on research on the effect of Birmingham water, which has been fluoridated for over five decades. Residents in Essex and Hartlepool are provided with naturally fluoridated water, but the remaining parts of the UK, or about nine out of ten Britons, have no access to fluoridated water.
The mineral naturally occurs in tap water, but its levels of concentration are very low and cannot have any noticeable effect on dental health unless enhanced. If added to tap water, fluoride can help fight tooth decay on a large scale, experts claim.
You can use a fluoridated toothpaste to supplement the mineral.
