1 In 5 Brits Skip Dentist Appointments To Go Out

Dental health is of the utmost importance

Before Cosmetic Dentistry by Perfect Smile

Dental health and oral hygiene play a huge role in the overall health of an individual.

However, millions of Britons skip dentist appointments in order to go out and have fun.

According to a survey carried out in relation to National Smile Month, around 18% of respondents said they would cancel their dentist appointment if they had the opportunity to go to the pub, go bowling, go to the cinema, buy new clothes or order a takeaway.

Professionals argue that ignoring oral health at the expense of having fun may not be the wisest move.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, explained that good oral health is based on several pillars and regular dental appointments are among them, along with everyday brushing.

People who decide to skip an appointment and compromise their oral health by snacking at the cinema or indulging in a poor diet should think twice about the consequences on their dental and overall health, he added.

In many cases, a check-up with the dentist may uncover problems in the early stages of development, such as gum disease or tooth decay.

Skipping appointments could mean that they remain undetected until it is too late to react, potentially leading to tooth loss and more serious complications.

Treatment of advanced conditions is more expensive, takes more time and the results are often less satisfying for patients, so professionals strongly recommend that people visit their dentist as often as they are told to.
