Causes & types of underbite correction treatment

If you have an underbite, you’ll likely know it’s more than just a cosmetic problem.

Some patients may choose to live and embrace their underbites, whereas many patients experience severe oral health problems such as:

  • Difficulty speaking
  • Chewing and biting challenges
  • Mouth and face pain caused by TMJ

If you are unhappy with the way your smile looks or the pain your underbite is causing you, get in touch with us today – we can help!

Defining an underbite

An underbite is a dental condition characterised by the lower teeth extending further than the upper front teeth.

These are also referred to as Class 3 malocclusions (prognathism).

Notoriously, underbites can cause a bulldog-like appearance in the mouth, which has caused many of our patients to feel self-conscious.

How are they caused?

Several factors can contribute to an underbite.

Underbites exist when teeth are in an incorrect alignment, which can happen due to bad habits like thumb sucking and pushing the tongue against the back of the teeth.

Genetics can also play a part as most underbites are inherited because jaw, tooth shape, and size are hereditary.

In many cases we come across, underbites are often the result of the lower jaw being too far forward.

Treatments for underbite correction and reversals

If you weren’t born with perfectly straight or aligned teeth, don’t worry, because you’re not alone!

While some cases of misaligned teeth do not require urgent dental support when reversing a difficult underbite, choosing to do so can result in significant benefits.

Advantages include:

  • Teeth are easier to clean
  • Risk of tooth decay and gum disease decreases
  • Less strain on the teeth, facial muscles and jaw
  • Reduces symptoms of temporomandibular disorders

Invisalign

Invisalign can produce some incredible results when it comes to realigning your smile.

However, when it comes to severe and complex cases, Invisalign does have its limitations.

Straightforward, simple underbite cases can be treated with Invisalign Full quite quickly. However, more severe underbites may require surgery before treatment.

The only way to see if you qualify for Invisalign would be to meet with an Invisalign-trained orthodontist, who can confirm if you are a suitable candidate for the invisible aligner system.

Alternative brace systems

Fixed, wired braces may also be a solution to correcting your overbite. However, again, in extreme cases, jaw surgery may be unavoidable.

Metal braces have a reputation for straightening teeth successfully. However, they have recently fallen out of patient favour due to newer, faster innovative brace solutions. You can explore them all here.

Underbite surgery

Certified oral surgeons can correct underbites with no issues – often prescribed in the most severe of cases, jaw surgery, in this case, will reshape and lengthen the upper jaw or simply shorten the bottom jaw.

Jaw surgery costs can be high, so it is important to distinguish if there is a medical need to pursue one. However, the NHS offers funding for grade 4/5 cases, with grade 3 cases reviewed individually.

Underbite correction costs

The final cost of fixing an underbite may vary from person to person because it will depend on the severity and if any additional procedures are required.

However, here’s a rough overview of what prices can look like per treatment:

  • Invisalign: £2,000-£5,000
  • Metal braces: £500-£3,000
