Mature smiles

The amount of teeth visible in the upper front teeth varies with age. This can be an essential consideration when designing a smile to appear natural for a specific age group. This will be :
- 3.5 mm at the age of 30
1 mm at the age of 50
0.5mm at the age of 70
On the converse, the lower teeth increase in visibility as people age.
The dentist tested the above parameters by getting the patient to speak some text whilst recording this on a video from the front. The average amount of teeth visible during the speech can then be seen by watching the video. This information is used during the creation of the smile. This can also be elicited by speaking and repeating the letter “M” a few times.
